Yardbirds Garden Art - Junkyard Reclaimed Metal Art Animals

Artist Richard Kolb
Yard Birds - Garden Sculptures
My father and I created the first Yardbird over 20 years ago in Jamestown, Kentucky. He spent most of his career making things out of metal, including farm gates and large satellite dishes. We began talking about all the things you could make with scrap materials and, after experimenting with things around our own home, the first Yard bird was born. People instantly loved them as much as we did, so we began creating Yard birds® full-time.

Now, Yardbirds are made in Louisville, KY. We try to use overrun, discontinued, rejected, and scrap materials as much as possible...in fact, most of the pieces on this site are made from scrap parts that were once in a transmission or other part of a vehicle.I think that Yardbirds are a great way to contribute to the good of the environment. They save rejected metal parts from ending up in a landfill and they beautify homes and yards everywhere!

I am very proud to say that all Yardbirds are proudly HANDCRAFTED in KENTUCKY! I am a juried member of Kentucky Crafted, C.R.A.F.T (Craft Retailers & Artists for Tomorrow) and theAmerican Craft Council.

For me, creating Yardbirds turns work into fun! Each Yardbird is unique, whimsical, and guaranteed to bring pleasure to its owner. A Yardbird is a great conversation piece because of the recognizable parts. Parts such as sun gears, spyder gears and different sorts of transmission chains are used in the creation of these awesome critters!

My medium is metal sculpture. I use mostly scrap and recycled parts to create my metal birds, critters, dogs, and cats. Some of the materials I use include garden tools, car parts, farm implements, bicycle parts, and mufflers. I think that Yardbirds are a great way to contribute to the good of the environment; they save rejected metal parts from ending up in a landfill and they beautify homes and yards everywhere! For me, creating Yardbirds turns work into fun! Each Yardbird is unique, whimsical, and guaranteed to bring pleasure to its owner. A Yardbird is a great conversation piece; many people have fun identifying parts I cleverly use to make them and they marvel at the way a simple tilt of a head can give a sculpture so much personality.I believe the things that make use happiest in life when we obtain them are not always the necessities, but usually the things that we do not need make us the happiest. And that's what Yardbirds are all about -- happiness!I am a graduate of the University of Kentucy, a lifelong resident of Kentucky, and a juried member of the Kentucky Craft Marketing Program and the American Craft Council.
